Where Does a Painting End?

This essay explores continuity in the long-term painting practice of H. Avni Öztopçu, from the mid-1980s to the 2020s. Rather than defining continuity through the repetition of forms, it asks whether it may be found in the changing relations between forms, surfaces, spaces and works.

Beginning with the ideas developed in Kurgusal Mekân (1989), the essay follows this question through works associated with Tek and Korunak, and towards the BİRİM / UNIT exhibition of 2020. Particular attention is given to Gezi MR-1 (1991), which was later reconsidered as a point of departure for the BİRİM / UNIT exhibition.

The essay proposes relational continuity not as a final theory, but as a way of looking again: a means of asking how forms change, connect, separate and become part of new structures across time.   Read the full essay →
